2026 US Open | Highlights of a Very Well-Rounded Round 3
The weekend at Shinnecock Hills is underway, bringing us closer to crowning the sixth U.S. Open champion at this historic venue. With the final pair for the third round approaching in about 45 minutes, the pressure is mounting for players who are no strangers to U.S. Open competition.
Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 U.S. Open champion at The Country Club, enters this round on a strong run, having secured three wins and a runner-up finish just last week in Canada. He currently trails Wyndham Clark by four shots. Clark, who won at Los Angeles Country Club the year following Fitzpatrick’s victory, holds a commanding lead after posting rounds of 64 and 69, marking the lowest 36-hole total in the history of U.S. Opens at Shinnecock.
Throughout the round, players faced difficult course conditions and challenging hole locations. Notable moments included an aggressive eagle on the fifth hole, which was described as the easiest on the course. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler worked to surge up the leaderboard, eventually overcoming a rocky start with bogeys on the first two holes to fight back into contention. His performance included a dramatic birdie and an eagle, showcasing the intense emotion and skill required to navigate Shinnecock Hills.
While some players like Clark extended their leads with precise play and successful scrambling, others like Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele struggled with consistency. Fitzpatrick faced difficulties with his driver, leading to a tough round, while Schauffele encountered a challenging double bogey at the 10th hole that tested his patience. Despite these setbacks, the field continued to grind through the day, with several players showcasing incredible touch around the greens.
As the day progressed, the winds eventually died down, allowing Wyndham Clark to maintain his dominance. He heads into the final round on Sunday with a significant six-stroke lead over four other players. With history showing that 21 players have held a 54-hole major lead of six strokes or more—with only one failing to win—Clark remains in an excellent position to claim another U.S. Open victory.
