After 42 days of quarantine, the last eight American cruise passengers exposed to hantavirus are headed home. The outbreak on the M/V Hondius killed three people and then forced more than 120 passengers to be evacuated from the Canary Islands. The federal government says the threat is over, and joining us now to talk more about that is Admiral Brian Christine, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health.
Admiral Christine expressed that this is a real victory for the administration, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the American people, as there was no outbreak of the hantavirus in the United States. He noted that the steps taken to repatriate American citizens and quarantine them at a facility in Nebraska were the right actions, reflecting great collaboration across all government agencies.
Regarding the benchmarks for ending the quarantine, Admiral Christine explained that the Andes variant of the hantavirus is unique because it can spread from person to person through close, prolonged contact. Given the 42-day incubation period, it was critical to maintain quarantine for that duration to ensure the safe release of the passengers. He noted that after 21 days, individuals who were not symptomatic could transition to home quarantine with monitoring by state and local health officials, though some chose to stay the full 42 days.
When asked about the biggest success in managing the outbreak, the Admiral pointed to the effective cross-agency collaboration from the federal level down to state and local governments. He highlighted the vital role played by his public health service officers in the response.
Discussing public health preparedness, Admiral Christine stated that the response has evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized that the current administration—under President Trump and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—is focused on protecting the American people from threats like the hantavirus or Ebola. He stressed that the key to building trust is “radical transparency,” which involves effectively communicating the rationale behind health decisions to the public. The Admiral concluded by reaffirming that the administration is committed to rebuilding trust in healthcare institutions like the HHS, CDC, NIH, and FDA through clear communication.
